Summary

The unbridled force of nature runs wild and relentless, with environments transforming drastically from one moment to the next. This is a story of monsters and humans and their struggles to live in harmony in a world of duality.

This is my second ever monster hunter game. I only played the first one of the ps2. And man is this a huge glo up compared to that one. Youre familiar with the concept of chasing after exotic monsters and the game itself is designed so beautifully. There is so much story, so much lore, excellent voice acting, beautiful Cut scenes. Customizable options for your character.

If you think about it this game feels a lot like Pokemon, monsters come in all different shapes and sizes, unique names, you yourself are tasked with beating them or catching them. Gotta hunt them all 😜 the main attraction this game has provided to me at least is the anticipation of the actual hunt that you will be tasked to take upon. It sets you up to plan ahead, of how to beat these monsters. What weapons you're gonna use, what armour, do you have the right things in your inventory etc... this game delivers a good starter course, main course and dessert sort of menu. You get smaller monsters and eventually when the difficulty spikes up you encounter bigger monsters. Some of the monsters are also able to counter you and feed on your weaknesses so planning ahead has to be vital. You have a lot of different weapons if memory serves right around 14 with different variations which will allow you to do a trial and error of which weapon will benefit you more in your main quests or side quests. You can even use more than one weapon.

The beauty of the combat in a Monster Hunter game is a strange, almost double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s great when it works and the weapon you like clicks for you. On the other, it can be punshining, a little clunky at times and more often you’ll start a combo and hit nothing but thin air because your target’s moved. And you'd look wack. There is also great attention to detail as you can wound a creature and the wound will be visible so you can basically aim there to take it down quicker. The weather can be unpredictable too, it can go from sunny to rainy very randomly.

(The anti woke agenda guys gonna have a field day of boycotting if they find out armour is not gender specific🫦Nobody tell them. Shhhh) you can go to quests with friends or even NPCs if you don't like people. Some dialogue can sound a bit goofy but Monster hunter is known for those anyways.

If you’re a Monster Hunter fan, you don’t need me to tell you how good this will be for you. If you’re not, play Dragon Age The Veilguard then🙄 Hopefully after this i won't get to play any more rpgs in a while. It's become draining at this point. It's just a lot of dedication when it comes to time. Luckily this didn't take me as long as most rpgs have in my life. But there does need to be a limit

If the goal of Monster Hunter wilds for Capcom, was to make a title for new and existing players. Then, they've somewhat done a mostly positive job, It's awesome.

Core gameplay loop is thoroughly enjoyable. and for me this is what makes the game seamless. Hunting monsters, grinding for gear, and playing co op.

I didn't find this difficult. As a new player I appreciate that, although early on the experience is overwhelming. You quickly adjust once you've learnt the basics.

My prior experience with the Monster Hunter franchise is none. I downloaded Monster Hunter World, and gave up after the character creator.

Now for constructive criticism. Capcom have persuaded me to engage with future installments and I love the game. But it certainly isn't without it's issues.

Who decides... to design UI like this? The game is literally covered in menus within menus, then with sub menus, and guess what... some more menus.

Irritating and unnecessary. This is something I'd like to see toned down, not to mention the constant in game pop ups that are irrelevant most of the time.

Performance is absolutely unacceptable. PC has major performance flaws and terrible lazy optimisation. PS5 and Series X can't even hold 60fps most of the time.

Graphics are hit and miss. Select regions look beautiful with great lighting. Others look washed and contain textures that look PlayStation 3 era at best.

Due to the overblown menus, I had a hard time figuring out co op with friends early on. It needs to be easier to get in and out of. I had no idea what I was doing.

When I wanted to play with friends. I add my friends, to then join a lobby, to then join a link party? What? Just make it simple, saves so much hassle.

Final Verdict - I strongly recommend Monster Hunter Wilds. The gameplay and design choices outweigh the negatives by far, but a lot of improvements are needed.

Monster Hunter has always been a franchise ive struggled to get into, and I had played Monster Hunter World previously but i didnt feel that eureka moment where i really learnt to love it. To say ive experienced that in Wilds wouldn't be entirely accurate, though i am loving the combat and variety in the monsters and environments. I believe the best parts of Wilds are in its mechanics and visual design. The story however, is lacking in my opinion. I dont love any of the characters and i find the dialogue a little cheesy and 1 dimensional, but with that being said i do understand why others would like it. The multiplayer system is also so flawed and annoying to use to the point where it is irredeemable honestly.

At the end of the day, i play this game to kill big monsters with an oversized saxophone and it does that really well whilst looking gorgeous in the process.
