Summary

Days Gone is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Bend Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Released in April 2019 for PlayStation 4 and later for PC in May 2021, the game is set in a post-apocalyptic world where players control Deacon St. John, a drifter and bounty hunter navigating a landscape overrun by "Freakers," zombie-like creatures created by a global pandemic. The gameplay focuses on exploration, combat, and survival elements, with players able to use various weapons, craft supplies, and upgrade Deacon’s motorcycle, essential for travelling across the vast and hostile environment. Days Gone combines narrative-driven missions with an open world filled with dynamic events, enemy camps, and environmental challenges.

THE UNDERRATED MASTAPEECE

Thankyou for the underrated likes, I can't help but update this review since its releasing again with remaster version soon.
This is my favourite game of all time, not because you will also love it like sekiro or ghost of Tsushima which everyone does,it's a story of a simple guy with a trusty lover (his bike) and a journey of hope that no matter what happens, life can still be beautiful.

Days Gone is a criminally underrated game that has left me emotionally moved by the sheer injustice of it all. This game is a true gem, waiting to be discovered and cherished by gamers everywhere. It offers a remarkable story, engaging gameplay, and a satisfying grind, all set within a vivid and living world teeming with challenges.
The individual elements of Days Gone, while already noteworthy on their own, come together in a beautiful symphony of post-apocalyptic survival. The thrill of navigating the treacherous landscape on your trusty motorcycle is an experience not to be missed. The game encourages you to take your time, savor the story, and immerse yourself fully in this captivating world on the brink of collapse.
I urge you, fellow gamers, to give Days Gone the attention it so rightfully deserves. Do not let this incredible journey slip through your fingers. Approach it with patience and curiosity, and you'll find yourself rewarded with a gaming experience that will stay with you long after the credits roll. So, hop on your motorcycle and embrace the adventure that awaits you in Days Gone – you won't regret it, hopefully.
With the release of remastered version,I hope it attains the same goal like it did with the PS4 version and I want everyone to play this because this is just masterpiece only if you feel it for yourself.

The heck with this game. I freaking love it. I get the feeling it has Daryl Dixon vibes. I love the nature, sound design, it's like it's superb. I love it.

Platinum (#37) 🏆

I’m gonna go ahead & say it, this game is severely underrated. I couldn’t put this game down. But that being said, at first I couldn’t pick it up.

This is a title that requires patience in its story, characters, & overall gameplay. A slow burn that eventually pays off. Extremely fun & I’ll even go on record to say that it is the best open world zombie game of all time. Also it's one of the best Playstation exclusives. Boom, I said it.

I experienced very few technical issues throughout my play & this is probably due to dev support since launch. I heard it was a mess when it first dropped, but not for me.

All in all, I cherish this game beyond belief & I recommend anyone who hasn’t played it to go ahead & do so. The hordes are an achievement in itself, upgrading your bike is rewarding, & the constant survival day in & day out is gritty & just a downright blast.

P.S. The new version of this app is AWFUL.

Final verdict: Buy It

Days Gone is an open-world post-apocalyptic action thriller made by lesser-known Sony first-party studio Bend, which doesn't sound that exciting on paper, but it does have some good substance to it that made me enjoy the game for what it is.

Visually, Days Gone is surprisingly stunning: character models are highly detailed and well animated, the environment is hyper-realistic with some attempts at diversity, clothing and guns are well designed, rain and snow look great and create puddles and snow buildup that react and stick to both protagonists clothing and bike tires. Zombies, which here are known as Freakers, are not that unique; they are just your usual archetypes you see in all zombie games, but I have to point out how they don't shy away from including child zombies that you can see get hassled and eaten by adults, which is rather hardcore, as well as I enjoyed the hunter type called Reacher that appears later on in the game, a type I am confident we will see used in TLOU3. Of course the main gimmick is swarms of enemies that I believe do not disappoint; these horde fights are exhilarating to watch unfold, a technically impressive showcase. What also concerns freakers, I do enjoy how they are not just mindless zombies but actual creatures that need food, water, build nests, and travel with groups; also, apparently, they shit a lot. Currently the game is current-gen optimized, but I have to fault the game for its Day 1 state, it was rather unstable, and I was forced to wait a few months for patches to play the game properly. Now, though, it's smooth and enjoyable at 60 fps.

Gameplay of Days Gone is, I would compare to recent Tomb Raider entries. You got your standard rifles, shotguns, pistols, and machine guns, but in fights you are required to do on-the-fly crafting from nearby resources you find to succeed the most, compared to Tomb Raider instead of TLOU because there is a need to roll around quite a bit. You can slow down time, and quality-wise, it's less refined, like Tomb Raider games in comparison to Naughty Dog's output. Equipment, though, is much more in-depth and varied than what TLOU provided; you can craft a pistol silencer, use radios attached to a bomb to attract and dispose of a group of enemies, and even a crossbow that you can optionally use has up to three different bolt types to craft, and of course, much more. Besides that, you can loot herbs that enhance your focus, stamina, and health. Considering how battling with herds requires you to run a lot, it is highly essential. You travel around on a bike, which is a highlight of Days Gone with how it feels to ride it, how you can upgrade it, and how you can visually customize it to have it look unique. It does have a fuel system that runs out, but fuel tanks always appear at least once in every location you visit, so it was never an issue for it to run out.

Shooting mechanics are pretty satisfying with good sound effects, but being accurate with some types of weapons, especially while fighting humans, can be inaccurate at times, but it's not an issue while fighting freakers. Melee combat is wonky, though; I prefer to only approach enemies with melee when I have a one-hit-kill weapon on me crafted. Human AI is not that good, but hordes of enemies manage to flank you often, which at times I was tricked by them into a corner quite a few times.

Open-world is nothing to write home about; most activities sum up to being Ubisoft-like tasks like cleaning up nests, searching up abandoned bases for upgrades, and such. The game is more focused on missions than exploration, but in open-world you can stumble on some encounters with hunters, like setting up traps that can knock you off a bike, and freaker wolves can suddenly start chasing you. It's interesting but a far cry from RDR2 random events. Also concerning hordes, you can find some in the open world early and fight some in early missions, but it is mostly the second half of the game that focuses on them after you upgrade yourself more to handle them, which I can see some find disappointing, but after clearing the game, all hordes get displayed on the map so you can have as much fun as you can with them. Bend fixed this issue by later adding challenges for free that you can access in the main menu, where you can immediately try out every type of encounter, including unlimited horde mode. I did find this update quite fun and addicting, as well as enjoyed how the badges you earn are later displayed on the protagonist's vest.

Story-wise Days Gone struggles greatly with pacing; there is a compelling narrative, but it's mostly present in the second half of the game, while you are tasked with doing fetch quests with irrelevant characters in the beginning. The mystery of freakers and especially O'Brian's character I thought was exciting, but sadly it's more of a groundwork for a future entry that sadly never will happen. Deacon himself is your standard lone wolf type with a tough exterior and a soft heart, basically your Daryl Dixon; his relationship with Boozer I found the most compelling, as well as Boozer's character as a whole. Deacon's relationship with Sarah is somewhat underdeveloped; they are just your average sweethearts that talk dirty to each other at times, something people took issue with, which I find hilarious. It, though, got better fleshed out later on. Got to admit his anger outbursts during gameplay are cheesy, but I can't fault him much; no one is stable in a post-apocalypse. The story as a whole feels like a TV show with how it's structured; it's episodic with some filler moments present, but it's not without some excellent episodes that I enjoyed. It's unironically a lot like TWD, a show that I love, and Days Gone basically allows you to be Daryl Dixon, with a bike and crossbow. I guess this is why I got a soft spot for it.

To sum up, Days Gone is a pretty good experience that I got some enjoyment from and could recommend trying out; it's not amazing or great, but it is still pretty good.
