Summary

Explore Cyrodiil like never before with stunning new visuals and refined gameplay in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.

I know I did say I was not going to be around much due to my drama queen outbursts over this delay but I too tend to talk shit sometimes because I just want to be dramatic if something doesn't go my way. I am after all....a Virgo.

I know this has been an anticipated review so I thought I would deliver. I played the original one however many years ago and seeing this as a surprise drop was pure insanity. I was never a fan of skyrim but this? Absolutely. The thing that has always intrigued me about remasters it is that they are interesting creations. They exist as like this puzzle piece that rests between the start and end of the puzzle. There have been games that have been remade with modern day technology and graphics like the Final Fantasy 7 game, that counts as a remake. As not only graphics are more realistic but characters and stories are redesigned and rewritten. This game however doesn't necessarily feel like a remake or even a remaster.

I do not mean to sound shady when I say that people who say Skyrim is the best game or even best open world game has no taste because I don't mean any shade cause at the end of the day they must know deep down it isn't. God I sound like a skyrim hater 🧍🏻‍♂️ But to me Oblivion will always be the godfather of open world games. Skyrim is one of the most beloved videogames of all time. Its reputation follows it from platform to platform see I'm not a total hater after all.

What I noticed about this remaster during launch there were a lot of bugs especially during even the tutorial. Something I wasn't familiar with in the original. But the bugs were not too much heavy impact on the game. Like NPCS getting lost in the background I will not provide a whole List about it, but eventually the more you process the less bugs showed up, till I eventually forgot they were even there. What I loved about this game was the fact that even though you feel like a hero, you are NOT the hero. Because actions always speak louder than words and the fact that actions do have consequences either you receive revelancy or irrelevancy and that doesn't really define if you are a bad or good person.

One great thing that made this game what it is giving it that Legend status is the quest design and how it depends on social deduction over power. It provides you options of how to approach your own gaming style where you can either talk to people and collect information and gossip from them to solve issues or you can go through books and riddles and figure it out yourself. Most RPGs have this uninspired gimmick of just providing you a list of quests and be like get cracking but this game let's you do what you want in a disorganised order which OCD people will not have fun seeing as to how disorganised they have to be. Rumors picked up in passing conversation can be major hints that lead to some interesting quests.

There's always reasonings as to why you have to do something and when to do it, meaning it wants you to enjoy the game and It also ensures that there's no rush. You're free to do what you wanna do. I only wish we had the twerking option🤔. Right from the bat the environments in this remaster look better than Skyrim. That's right Skyrim you're not catching a break from me tonight bitch😭. Caves are more detailed and look sharper, with much better Shadow tracing. Oblivion also has...the bigger map. Sooooooo!!!!! Plus characters have much more spicy stuff to tell.

This clash between realities makes Oblivion's aesthetic so delightful; the mundanity of sleeping at an inn or haggling with a blacksmith, then strolling backwards into hell. In Oblivion, the devs make you have your fantasy cake and eat it too. This follows into general character creation and roleplay. The decisions you make in terms of class, race, and birthsign give you a headstart, but they don't decide what gaming style you have to choose, you can choose yourself if you wanna be stealthy, a fire mage or a Knight or even combinations. Totally up to you. Combat is also something that had been enhanced performance style. You receive new animations which offer more versatility when switching between melee weapon types and even combat from afar feels smooth.

One thing that surprised me is that....you can actually....Sprint in this. Correct me if im wrong but I don't remember being able to sprint in the original. Again correct me if im wrong. Again I love these little quality of life changes. The level system is also pretty straightforward, doesnt take a scientist to figure it out. Makes gameplay feel better. If I remember right back then if you got stronger the game would be more punishing but not in this one. Kinda like what Pokemon did with shared XP lowkey. Little quality of life changes you know what I mean?

Oblivion Remastered is not a perfect game because Oblivion is not a perfect game. Dungeons are as repetitive in the remaster as ever, but man does it look cool when you slay dragons. Overall a great approach to a remaster that I really enjoyed. If you never played the original and don't know which to pick and you want a much easier gaming experience then play this.

Anybody ever run into the bug where Count Janus Hassildor of Skingrad just disappears never to be seen again which makes it so you can't finish several quests that involve talking to him? if so, anybody know of a solution to that bug? I looked everywhere, posted to the subreddit, even emailed Bethesda directly and all I get is "reload a previous save" which would set me back at least 50 hours so that is not an option at this point. He's not in his room either apparently he's in the chamber of the lost which is inaccessible outside of one quest.

Shot in the dark, but if anybody happens to see this and ran into the same problem and figured out how to reach him, please let me know.

Anyways, this game is like fucking crack to me. I put 100 hours into already and it's only been 2 weeks since it released. That's what makes it even more upsetting that I can't even finish this mage guild quest line without making a new character, but I digress.

Some bugs are cute and charming, some are absolutely game breaking. Unfortunately I've experienced alot of both.

PLEASE TODD....Remake Morrowind, Fallout 3, & New Vegas next. I need more.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is a new version of the fourth game in the Elder Scrolls series. The game still contains the charms and flaws of the original. This game played a formative part of my love for video games, along with Fallout 3, and I got lost in its world many times. Playing this through again I had many flashbacks to long summer game sessions exploring nooks and crannies for treasure and romping through the world, fooling around.

For this remaster, a fresh coat of paint and some new voices add freshness. The game is very true to its original form (horse armor as dlc and all), and plays and sounds very similar. The updated visuals do a lot of work here, while the gameplay itself feels dated. Skyrim feels like it had a lot more charm to the world and dungeons, and more character, and that is saying a lot as a Betheada joint. The gameplay here was fun and nostalgic, but got stale pretty fast, as the caves, dungeons and Oblivion Gates blur together due to the copy and paste layout. Combat feels dull as well - thwack thwack, and on higher difficulties, spamming potions or running away casting heal spells.

As the review shows, this game was a gem, like Daggerfall was a gem, but playing this today feels like reading a classic novel. It is important, but feels like it belongs in an earlier time. Still love it, but for what it was, and that is just a memory.

Played on: Playstation 5
Version: Playstation 5
Edition: Digital

Never played it back on its initial release so I am rating this as a new release not only for my first time playthrough but as a 2025 re-release.

Not impressed. I know it's older, but this game is so bland. I LOVE Skyrim but this felt so watered down & ultimately confusing. I must be getting older. I need my hand held ya'll. They just expect me to know what to do & where to go on certain quests.

I love the world & the soundtrack is amazing. The new code of paint isn't bad either. Looks decent. I just don't have 100+ hours to give right now I guess. The older I get the more I actually can appreciate live service games (Fortnite, Marvel Rivals, etc.) I can get in, get out whenever I please without having to feel like I've clocked into work.

I also know that focusing on heavenly things & not earthly ones is a reason as well. I am more drawn to Jesus & the hunger of wanting to service others & ultimately share with them my testimony & His word. To help them to come to know & give their life to Jesus. This all ends one day & I pray that if you do not know Him to do business with the Lord & have a relationship so you can spend eternal life in the kingdom with Him. He died for you. He LOVES you.

Anyways, this game is meh. In no world is it BAD but in no CURRENT world is this great (in my opinion).

P.S. I will most likely come back every now & then to at least try & finish the main story quests.

Final verdict: Wait for a sale
