Summary

The game takes place in the fictional land of Ivalice, where the empires of Archadia and Rozarria are waging an endless war. Dalmasca, a small kingdom, is caught between the warring nations. When Dalmasca is annexed by Archadia, its princess, Ashe, creates a resistance movement. During the struggle, she meets Vaan, a young adventurer who dreams of commanding an airship. They are quickly joined by a band of allies; together, they rally against the tyranny of the Archadian Empire.

One of my fav FF worlds. Gambit system is great idea but the excution wasn't ideal. Decent story and characters. Balthier is top tier FF character. Fell off the Bahamut dungeon because it annoying with the debuffing enemies.

One of the more mediocre final fantasies. I find the combat system pretty dull, and the story honestly borrowed way too much from Star Wars, especially near the end. This game does have a good cast though, with Balthier and Larsa as particular stand-outs.

I had a long complicated journey with this game. I picked up a used copy for PS2 years ago at the recommendation of a friend and tried it (it was technically my first real FF game) and I could not get into it. After playing more FF I tried again a year and a half ago and while I enjoyed the customization and general game Play, I still struggled to stay interested and I put it down only to come back to a few times to no avail. This last time it hooked me because I learned how much you need to understand this game to really get enough out of it. Not by reading guides so much, but by committing to the mechanics and really playing with all of your options to come up with a build and system of gambit that work for you and are fun to plow through enemies with. And then you can really appreciate how clever and interesting this very strange game is. The cast is at first very odd, but end up working perfectly. The soundtrack doesn't have major earworms but every piece is perfect atmosphere. The settings and the people start to feel like a real world. This game really impressed me with its sheer depth, especially for a (albeit late) PS2 game. And there lies its downfall because my only fee complaints with the quality of life features and strange quirks like the treasure system seem to be because the game got too big for its britches. So maybe one day I'll see just how much better Zodiac Age is and if it makes this a near perfect game.

TL,DR
This game is weird and frustrating to get into but once you get there, it is an incredibly enjoyable and unique journey

I love it, maybe one of my favorites, but has a lot of flaws.
