Summary

Welcome to Hope County, Montana, land of the free and the brave, but also home to a fanatical doomsday cult known as The Project at Eden’s Gate that is threatening the community's freedom. Stand up to the cult’s leader, Joseph Seed and the Heralds, and spark the fires of resistance that will liberate the besieged community. In this expansive world, your limits and creativity will be tested against the biggest and most ruthless baddest enemy Far Cry has ever seen. It’ll be wild and it’ll get weird, but as long as you keep your wits about you, the residents of Hope County can rest assured knowing you’re their beacon of hope.

Another 10/10 for me especially if this was your first far cry game. The location in combination with the incredible graphics lifted this game to heights unimaginable. The story was interesting not perfect, but I think the highlight of this game was the open world anyways. The interesting missions you encounter, as well as people is the other side of the coin in what makes this game so amazing.

Far Cry 5 is an experimental entry in the series that does provide a shakeup to the gameplay structure of the series, but some questionable decisions prevent it from being a step up from the golden standard that is the third entry.

Setting this time around is not so isolated state of Montana, but it is set in a city that is under the control of a terroristic cult. Enviroment is your standard American country side, not too visually distinct and exciting, but graphical fidelity does make it appealing on the eyes, but overall not my favorite kind of setting to explore. Detail in character models, enviroment and weaponry is rather great and makes the game still look impresive for todays standards. Besides that, Ubisoft gave this entry a 60fps patch for current gen consoles, that is praise worthy considering how crucial good perfomance is for a first person shooter.

Narrative wise FC5 probably is the most Ubisoft tried to do something unique since FC3, and besides some flaws, like poor structure of the story tied directly to your gameplay progression, it is quite good and memorable with an ending that still can't forget years after I rolled credits. Joseph Seed is a mad manipulator that is played effectively, every scene with him is a highlight, I believe he as of yet the only villain in the series that felt like a horrifying threat every time is on screen. His family though does have some good ones, but some are less effective in what they are trying to convey, but as a group of villains I found them quite compelling overall. What is not good are the ally characters, most of them are just not that interesting of well fleshed out, standouts probably are Nick Rye and the Marshal, former for having a great quest concerning his family, latter because he is acted well and reminded me of Shayne from TWD. Protagonist being mute and just irrelevant nothingburger is a rather big misfire, just makes some interactions less effective as a result.

Gameplay did receive a shake up, both good and one gnarly one. Shooting mechanics and animations finally got renewed since FC3, it's enjoyable and punchy, but I do hate how enemies like to start swaying around when you shoot them while keeping the same momentum. I do enjoy the focus on melee and melee weapons like bats and shovels, fun and takedowns are surprisingly brutal, signiture weapons are somewhat lacking though. Having microtransaction options feels slimy but everything can be earned and bough with in game currency, but you can just feel the games economy being stingy at times. Hunting now is mostly for money, crafting is completely removed and regulated to skills instead, which is a bummer. I do enjoy the bigger focus on flying vehicles, especially planes, really fun and to use them. Open-World chests got replaced with cashes that make you do a puzzle first before receiving the goods, I am a sucker for this type of content and enjoyed it quite alot. And the gnarly part is the fact story progression is tied to the a "liberation bar" that measures how much you progressed and if you reach a certain point - a caravan arrives to knock you out and force you do a story mission...It's a horrible idea, the game encourages you to pick which region you want to clear out first and allows you to tackle any sort of content first, but then contredicts itself and drags you away without asking.

Soundtrack on the other hand is brilliant, alot of great tracks that bring out the character of the enemy faction quite well. Just a high amount of banger I enjoy listening to even outside of the game.

To sum up: Far Cry 5 is a pretty good entry in the series that tries to do something new, succeeds, but then decided to do some questionable decisions that just without them this game could have even rivaled FC3, but alas it's just a good shooter with some glipses of brilliance in between, which I guess what most Ubisofts games are in the end.
